The "Mr. Handstand" award is a contest for Level 5 and Level 6 gymnasts, and has long been a tradition at the State Championship. Winners of previous handstand contests in Preliminary and Conference Championship meets, along with preliminary winners at the State Championship event, qualify into the final championship handstand contest. Level 5 and Level 6 gymnasts will compete in their respective age groups to determine the ultimate "Mr. Handstand" winner.
This contest serves two purposes:
- To promote the development of one of the most important skills in gymnastics: "The Handstand"
- To promote correct technique in the execution of the Handstand
The finalist in each Level 5 and 6 age division from each of the three conferences who maintain their handstand WITHOUT WALKING for the longest period of time at the State Championship will be awarded the title of "MR. HANDSTAND 2008."
